What to do in case of a roof leak?
Nobody wants a roof leak, but unfortunately it can happen to any roof.
Both a pitched roof and a flat roof can be damaged by storms, poor maintenance or wear and tear. This way, water can enter your home before you even notice it. This water can freeze, cause rot or mold and thus forms a weak spot in the roof structure.
Of course, the leak is often only noticed after a long period of rain, which can become visible on your ceiling, on the walls or you may hear it dripping.

Flat roof
With a flat roof it is more difficult to find a leak because it is not immediately visible. However, a flat roof is easier to reach. You can then look for cracks or holes in the roof covering or openings around the seams at the location of the visible leak on top of the roof.

Sloping roof
A leak in a sloping roof can sometimes be found from the ground, especially if a roof tile has sagged/shifted or blown away due to a storm! If you can't see it from the ground, you can always look on the roof yourself to see if everything is still in place. If all the tiles are still in place, water may be entering via the ridge or along seams near the chimney, and the glaze layer of the roof tile may also be damaged/aged, allowing moisture/water to pass through. Splashing water from the gutter can also cause leakage, especially if the gutter is full of dirt/leaves and the water is not washed away and rises. You can prevent this yourself by cleaning your gutter once or twice a year or having it cleaned.
