Our chimney renovation
In the past, fires were lit indoors in the middle of the room and the smoke went out through the roof through various openings. Then, in time, it was placed on the wall with the chimney having a horizontal opening. It was soon discovered that the smoke did not escape optimally from the room. As a result, the chimney was created, which had to ensure that the flue gases were properly led outside. This led to the chimney as we still know it today and consists of two principles;
- Warm air is lighter than cold air, by placing a vertical column above the fire the heated air rises quickly, drawing in smoke (also called draught)
- When wind blows over the chimney, it sucks in air according to Bernoulli's principle, a physical law that describes the flow behavior of liquids and gases, and relates pressure changes to changes in height and speed. It is a law from the aero– and hydrodynamics described in the eighteenth century by Daniel Bernoulli
Nowadays most houses are no longer heated entirely by fire, but this is often an addition. And the basic heating is mainly controlled by the central heating.

Chimneys on top of houses are therefore no longer all used, but can also have an ornamental function.
If a chimney is used by means of a fireplace, it is wise to have it swept annually by a recognized company. In contrast to other European countries (Germany, Switzerland, Norway and Finland), this is not mandatory but is recommended. However, insurance in the Netherlands increasingly sets requirements regarding having the chimney swept, after all, they are the ones who have to pay out in the event of fire!
Unfortunately, thousands of small and large chimney fires still occur every year. This is due to construction errors, incorrect diameter of the flue compared to the fireplace stove, incorrect fuel or incorrect firing behaviour. Carbon monoxide poisoning can unfortunately still occur as a result, which is sometimes the result of a blockage in the flue. Therefore, always hang a carbon monoxide detector near the fireplace.
Although it is very important that you maintain the flue well, the maintenance of the outside is also important. This will make the chimney last longer.
